TASK 6 : STORYBOARD

Definition: Storyboard - It is a picture that is animatedly drawn or 3 dimensional that tells the story of what you are trying to tell.

Story boards are often used in media planning. Movie makers, television shows and advertising use a story board in the first steps of production and in sales pitches. They lay out the flow of the story with rough sketches, usually one or two frames for each key part of the story. It gives the persons they are selling the production to an idea of the story in a visual form, rather than having to give them a script.

  • The purpose of a storyboard is to photograph each and every shot of a film with a list of key information written underneath it.
  • Storyboards allow a director to visualise the whole film before filming and also allows the camera person to understand how the film is to be shot.
  • Storyboards also allow you to change elements if they don't work visually before the expensive film making process.

Each frame of the Storyboard should contain the following elements:
  1. Shot number - Each shot of the storyboard must be numbered so that the intended sequence of the shots can be followed.
  2. Framing - Is the shot a close up? Medium shot? Long shot?
  3. Drawing - A drawing visualisation of what is happening in the shot.
  4. Action - Brief description of what is happening in the shot.
  5. Dialogue - Single lines of dialogue may be written (optional)
  6. Sound Effects - Are there any specific sounds, diegetic, and non diegetic?
Each frame on the storyboard must have a shot description, such as framing, ecu, ls, etc.
Also information on movement and position such as the following abbreviations could be added:
  • H/A - high angle
  • L/A - low angle
  • POV - point of view
  • 2-SHOT - two people in a shot
  • OTS - over the shoulder
  • TRACK/DOLLY - move camera on wheeled platform
  • CRAB - sideways movement
  • PULL FOCUS - change what is focused on

TASK 4 : Audience Research

Audience research is a systematic and accurate way of finding out about your audience. There are two main things that audience research can do:

(1) estimate audience sizes, and

(2) discover audience preferences.

Radio and TV stations are unique in having a special need for audience research: this is the only industry that cannot accurately count its audience. A factory will always count the number of products it sells. A newspaper will (or could) always know its paid circulation. An organization that provides services rather than products (e.g. a hospital) is able to accurately count the number of people who walk through its doors. But radio and television programs are given away free to their audiences, and there is no way of measuring how many people tune into a program - without audience research.

Methods of audience research

The most common method of audience research is the survey: a group of people is selected, they are all asked the same questions, and their answers are counted. But as well as surveys, there are many other methods of audience research, including observation, mechanical measurement (people-meters) and qualitative research. The first part of this book deals with surveys, and the second part covers most of the other methods.

Audience research methods can be applied for any activity with audiences: not only radio and television stations, but also print media, artistic activities, and (most recently) the internet. The methods described in this book apply to all of these, as well as to the study of societies (social research) and economic behaviour (market research).

I created the questionnaire below to help gather some feedback into which genre i should pick, why it would be most effective and what kind of effects and editing i should use when putting together my music video. My Questionnaire

As part of my music production task I have conducted a questionnaire in order to see what elements my potential audience (my piers) expect and want to see in a music video. It consists of both qualitative and quantitative research in order to gain detailed research:

Research analysis:
The most popular genre of music was R&B with 31% of the participant selecting it as one of the genres they enjoyed listening to most. However, Rock and less commercial genres were also highly popular with each of them receiving 25% of the total votes.
In response to my 2Nd question a staggering 60% of those who participated agreed that they were attracted to watching music videos by a storyline and good visual effects. This helps me choose what format my music production could follow in order to satisfy the consumer needs.
The next area I looked at was on which formats my piers watched music videos and there were two formats which were most popular. 80% watched the videos on the Internet and 60% watch them on the television. A further 72% said they preferred a storyline to appear compared to abstract elements and archive footage and 80% said they liked those with a storyline to follow a linear(chronological) pattern.
I then went on to ask which of the 3 main factors they liked: abstract, narrative, performance or a mixture. It was clear that many of them wanted to see a mixture with 60% choosing it.
Only 40% of the students who participated said they liked a stripped down acoustic version of the song to appear in the video.
Furthermore 100% of the students said that they liked the use of special effect with 20% of those saying it should be used in moderation; layering and colour effects were the most popular effects which they wanted to see in music video’s.
Finally we asked which music channels were most popular and 54% said that they watch MTV. This was by far the most popular channel amongst the selected participants.

TASK 3: IDEA 3

Idea 3

My final idea was for a song by The Streets called 'fit but you know it'. this is another song that does not fit the convention of a single music genre. it is a mixture of electronic, garage and hip-hop but having listened to the song i think theres alot that we could do with the song. it has humorous lyrics similar to 'booty cal' but also talks about the encounter between the performer and a 'fit' girl. the music is fast and upbeat and the lyrics are very clear and almost spoken rather than sung. i think that the use of visible transitions and effects would this suit this video well as it is lighthearted and fun. we ould use letter boxing to show the different things he speaks about and speeding up effects to keep up with the musics fast pace.

Song Lyrics

"Fit But You Know It"

[intro]
Excuse me girl
I know it's a bit embarrassing but
I just noticed some tan lines
On your shirt

See I reckon you're about an 8 or a 9,
Maybe even 9 and a half in four beers time.
That blue top shop top you've got on IS nice,
Bit too much fake tan though - but yeah you score high.

But there's just one little thing that really really,
Really really annoying me about you you see,
Yeah yeah like I said you are really fit
But my gosh don't you just know it

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh don't you know it

So when I looked at you standing there with your hoard,
I was waiting in the queue looking at the board
Wondering whether to have a Burger or chips
Or what the shrapnel in my back pocket could afford
When I noticed out the corner of my eye
Looking toward my direction
Your eyes locked onto my course
I couldn't concentrate on what I wanted to order,
Which cost me my place in the queue I waited for YEAH

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit but my gosh don't you know it

Whoa! Leave it out
Are you smoking crack or something?
Leave it Out
Mike just leave it just leave it
We cannot have that behaviour in this establishment
S'not worth it mike, just leave it
Don't Touch Me, S'not Worth It
Don't Touch Me, D, Look I'm Alright
Don't Touch me

For a while there I was thinking - yeah but what if?
Picturing myself pulling with bare white hot wit
Snaring you as you were standing there opposite
Whether or not you knew it I swear you didn't tick
And when that bloke in the white behind us lot queuing
Was clocking onto you too yeah I had to admit
That yeah yeah you are fit,
And yeah I do want it,
But I stop sharking for a minute to get chips and drinks

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh don't you know it

Now, I bashed my head hard earlier choosing a brew.
But I am digressing slightly so I'll continue.
I didn't want to bowl over all geezer and rude,
Not rude like good but just rude like uncouth,
You girls think you can just flirt and it comes to you,
But let me tell you, see, yes, yes, but you are really rude,
And rude as in good, I knew this as you stood and queued,
But I just did not want to give the satisfaction to you!

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh don't you know it

Oy, just as you started to make your big advance

With the milkshake and that little donut in hand
I was like nah, I can't, even though you look grand
But you look sharp there smiling hard suggesting and
Gleaming away with your hearty hearty looking tan
But I admit the next bit was spanner to my plan
You walked towards my path but just brushed right past
And into the arms of that fucking white shirted man

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh don't you know it

What do I give a fuck.. I've got a girlfirend anyway
(whoa, we've all had a drink mate)
We're all a bit drunk, yeah we've had a few fair play
I got this stella I bombed from that last café
This nights not even begun, yes yes oh yay

I did fancy you a bit though yeah I must say
I would rather I hadn't mugged myself on display
But this is just another case of female stopping play
On otherwise a total result of a holiday

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh don't you know it

[outro]
Ha ha huh huh huh
You're fit but you know it
You're fit but you know it
You're fit but you know it
I think I'm going to fall over
I think I'm going to fall
Fucking hell

TASK 3: IDEA 2

Idea 2

My second idea was for a track by a band called The Midnight Beast and their song booty call.the song has a humorous feel and talks about 'a male slumber party', the lyrics are about the crazy things three friends are getting up to, along with three beautiful girls who phone them for a 'booty call' in the middle of the night.our video could be in a parody style with a comedic approach. there could be lots of fast random shots related to the words and story line that follow the events of the night. we could use speeding up effects in order to show the passing of time over the night. we could shots from high in the corners of bedrooms in order to make it feel like a fly on the wall production, where we are gazing into the events of the night from behind the scenes. there should be lots of bright colours to reflect the light tone and shots should use many different visible transitions.

Song Lyrics:

I'm with my friends having a sleepover at mine,
Mum said lights off, but they're still on at half nine,
There's nothing gay 'bout doing nails and doing hair,
Nor nothing gay 'bout three boys playing truth or dare,
That's when my brush vibrated right between my legs,
T-t-to my surprise it was my phone instead,
Dru makes and interception,
Grabs my phone out my hand,
'Hello you've reached the midnight beast, you're ruining our plans! '

B-double-o-t-y
It's three over average girls calling three under average guys
"We're fucked up and we're ready to play
We wanna do things we'll regret the next day"
NO!
I wanna play cluedo with my bros
NO!
I wanna paint rainbows on my toes
NO!
I don't wanna hurl, I want a comforting look
When Noah kisses Allie in the notebook
It's just a booty call
even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call

Now my phones on silent, they still call on private number
I can't believe this desperation to disturb my slumber party
I'm in my dressing gowny while Ashley's making brownies
Dru is in the back room playing twister on his own,
HELL YEAH!
We're wearing our jim-jams
HELL YEAH!
We're playing the flute
HELL YEAH!
We're showing our sizes, the f***ing surprise is
that yours hasn't grown

And then I hear my!
B-double-o-t-y
It's three over average girls calling three under average guys
We're f***ed up and we're ready to play
We wanna do things we'll regret the next day
B-double-o-t-y
Three overconfident, stereotypical, cheerleader types,
wQ're f***ed up and
We wanna have fun
You can be the boys we'll regret when we're done
NO!
I wanna play Sleeping Lions
NO!
I'm busy defending Zion
NO!
There's no point in calling coz I'll never respond,
The boys and me are getting tips from Legally Blonde,
It's just a booty call
Even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call

I'm not a booty call, I'm just a normal boy
I want to stay at home and play with my toys
We are three boys not looking for three girls,
My Ring-tone's like a missile bringing war to my world
Cheese-strings, Party Rings are my favourite things,
Marshmellows with hot choclate, bitch we're living like kings!
I wanna have cheese pepperoni
I wanna play my little pony
I don't wanna hurl I want a chocolate fountain
Whilst we snuggle up to watch broke back mountain
It's just a booty call
Even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call
It's just a booty call
Even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call
right------

TASK 3: Mind Mapping - IDEA 1

Here are some of my ideas for creating my music video.

Idea 1 -

Artist: Kele

Song: Everything you wanted

Genre: Indie

Everything You Wanted Lyrics

I see the bags in the empty hallway
I can tell something has changed.
I see the pain written over the face
And i know i pushed you too far.

if you want,
too leave me,
you must know,
one thing.

I could have given you everything you wanted
everything you needed. x4

There are times when i lost my mind
I am told im only halfway
But you were there
In my thoughts,

in my head
In my heart
above the left side

I know the time for us has past,
but you must know one thing

I could have given you everything you wanted
everything you needed. x4

and i say,
dale dale im a deero
finding it hard too breathe x4

I could have given you everything you wanted
everything you needed. x4

oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

The Idea

I started by listening to the song lyrics for this song. The song is initially about a break up between a couple, the girl is still very much in love with him, however the boy isn't and wants to move on.
I thought this idea would be perfect and achievable when creating my music video as the song has a good rhythm, and I found it easy to picture ideas. The actor playing the boy would be walking towards the camera singing the lyrics to the song, but instead of just having one location, i will use several. This will create the sense that the boys mind is all over the place; instead of in just one location. I will film in a variety of locations, with very different and interesting backgrounds to help capture the audiences attention, including: City centre, Country Road, Canal.
During each chorus of the song their would be footage of the couple before they had split up, of all the good times they'd spent together. I would use a variety of different shots, including Long shots, Medium Shots and those all important Close Up shots to help capture the actors facial expressions. All of the shots set when the couple were together will be shown in black and white to represent the time difference between then and now.
During the rest of the video the boy will be walking and walking, away from his troubles and hopefully to a better place; he's trying to escape all of his problems.
Between the start and the end of the song will be a difference in time. The first few shots of my music video I will shoot in the morning, and the last few shots will be shot in the evening, preferable when its dark to represent the passing of time.

Task 2: Analysis of Music Video - Rihanna: Unfaithful

Artist: Rhianna

Target Audience: Teenagers, 12 – 21 years +, Both Sexs

Analysis:

Types of shots used: Mid-Shot, Close-Up, Long-Shot, Tracking, Over-The-Shoulder, Extreme-Close-Up, Panning, Low-Angle.

Starts with woman alone in a black dress looking into the mirror, close ups of un clothed body parts i.e. shoulders. Lighting highlights the sexual parts of the woman, making her attractive which is what the target audience would want to see. Either male or female, males for the appeal and females for what they want to look like.

Man and woman sitting opposite each other talking and enjoying company, man leaves for moment, woman recieves a note from a man whose face we do not see, she subsequently hides the note before her friend/boyfriend returns. Because of the name of the song, 'Unfaithful' we could begin to see that the events that we are viewing are of the begginngs of an end to their relationship. Although there are no words being sung the actions that are portrayed tell the audience everything. I will take particular attention to this when shooting my music video as this is very helpful when trying to convey the theme or idea the song is presenting.

Something that is also striking is the facial expressions the woman shows throughout the 1 minute i have looked at. Although she is in a setting where normally a woman would be happy and comfortable, her facial expressions depict another story, quite different to the one that i described.

Song Lyrics:

Story of my life
Searching for the right
But it keeps avoiding me
Sorrow in my soul
Cause it seems that wrong
Really loves my company

He's more than a man
And this is more than love
The reason that the sky is blue
The clouds are rolling in
Because I'm gone again
And to him I just can't be true

And I know that he knows I'm unfaithful
And it kills him inside
To know that I am happy with some other guy
I can see him dying

I don't wanna do this anymore
I don't wanna be the reason why
Everytime I walk out the door
I see him die a little more inside
I don't wanna hurt him anymore
I don't wanna take away his life
I don't wanna be...
A murderer

I feel it in the air
As I'm doing my hair
Preparing for another date
A kiss upon my cheek
As he reluctantly
Asks if I'm gonna be out late
I say I won't be long
Just hanging with the girls
A lie I didn't have to tell
Because we both know
Where I'm about to go
And we know it very well

Cause I know that he knows I'm unfaithful
And it kills him inside
To know that I am happy with some other guy
I can see him dying

I don't wanna do this anymore
I don't wanna be the reason why
Everytime I walk out the door
I see him die a little more inside
I don't wanna hurt him anymore
I don't wanna take away his life
I don't wanna be...
A murderer

Our love, his trust
I might as well take a gun and put it to his head
Get it over with
I don't wanna do this
Anymore
Uh
Anymore (anymore)

I don't wanna do this anymore
I don't wanna be the reason why
And everytime I walk out the door
I see him die a little more inside
And I don't wanna hurt him anymore
I don't wanna take away his life
I don't wanna be...
A murderer (a murderer)

No no no no

Yeah yeah yeah

Brief Info On Genre: R&B “Rhythm and Blues”

“A style of music developed by African Americans that combines blues and jazz, characterized by a strong backbeat and repeated variations on syncopated instrumental phrases.” R&B has elements from funk, soul, pop, blues and hip-hop.

Task 2 : The Music Industry

Record Labels

Definition: Record Label - A company that promotes and produces music.

A record label is a company which produces and promotes artists. Their money is financed into supporting all their artist's needs and is later obtained by their artist's tours merchandise, digital sales, CD, DVD's, Vinyl etc. Record labels aim at making their artist known and heard through different media formats.

The two types of records labels are major and independent, the four main major labels are Sony BMG, EMI, UNIVERSAL and WARNER. All four of these labels operate sub-labels, they are owned by larger media conglomerates which controls other sections of the media, they control over 70% of the market globally and they don't specialize in one style of music.

There are different advantages and disadvantages to major label, some of the advantages a major label are that they have more money to spend on artists, biggest of their status their artist will be more recognizable to audiences and have quicker success, some of the disadvantages would be that artist would endure more pressure because a lot of money could be lost if they are unsuccessful, the artist has less control and there is more competition within the record labels.

Independent labels is any label who isn't part of the 'big four' is considered to be an independent label, they usually decide to cater towards niche audiences and are often seen as more creative as they don't mind releasing uncommercial music but more experimental music. Like major record labels there are advantages and disadvantages of independent labels. Some of the advantages are that there is more artistic freedom so the actual artistic is free to move in any creatives direction they want, they have less pressure to make music and they have a closer relationship with their label. However some of the disadvantages are that they may not have access to the same range of media coverage as the major labels, it may take longer for the artist and their music to be released and they are limited to funds because of the lack of money independent labels have in comparison to major labels.

Task 2: Codes & Conventions of a Music Video

Codes & Conventions of a Music Video:

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional (promo) clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos were simply known as MTVs because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country. Music videos are now known as MVs in Chinese entertainment.

Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.

Codes = Equipment used cameras, also symbolic codes for example what the person is feeling and how we see that.

Convention = The way things are done within the video this also describes the genre of the music video.

I have looked at the different style of music videos, and the 3 main forms that they come in; Performance, Narrative and Image.
Performance speaks for itself,
where the song is performed either straightforwardly in a concert hall or in a more exotic location and the emphasis is on performance.
Narrative is where the narrative of the song is played out or sometimes another separate narrative is told.
Image is where the content of the video does not relate obviously to the lyrics and there i not an immediate concert setting, what is emphasised is the image of the artist.

For every type/genre of music there is a different style of video. Some conventions even spread over into different genres. I looked at different genres of videos and the codes and conventions that go with them.

For example the conventions that normally go with Hip/Hop & Rap videos are; Girls, Money, Cars, Big Houses, Alcohol, Clubs & Bling and are normally narrative or performance based videos. Indie Band videos are normally on live stages and are quite performance based. Boy band videos are performance based and are continually flooded with clips of concerts, screaming girl fans and dance routines. Heavy Metal videos are surrounded by mosh pits, dark clothing and screaming rockers and are all performance based. R 'n' B videos are quite glamourised, include a lot of voyeurism and bling and are mostly narrative/image based.

Song: Heartbeat - Indie

Artist: Scouting For Girls

Target Audience: Teenagers, 13 – 20+ years, Both Sexs

Analysis of Music Video

Types of shots used: Mid Shot, Long Shot, Panning, Close Up, Zoom, Low Angle

Starts with two females pinning up items onto a board, they are wearing dated archaic dresses from the 1980's, it then moves onto the bands lead singer starting to play on a piano, once again he looks straight into the camera when he has the close up on him. I will definitely be using this technique in my video as it draws in the audience to the action. The lighting then helps the transition between them singing on the stage alone to being the live acts in a school disco. It would appear that in all the music videos i have analysed, the number of transitions and speed of transitions between shots depends on the temp, beat and rhythm of the music.

Scouting For Girls: Heartbeat Lyrics

Am I alone in your heart?
Have I hope with your heart?
She's such a teaser, she's such a star.
Give me a reason or gimme a chance.
Am I alone in your heart, or am I alone...?
It tears me apart.
Am I alone?

Doing all I can do, just to be close to you.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.
Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the arse.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.

Give me an evening, or give me a night.
I'll show you the time, of your life.
I'll walk you home safe, from the dark.
I'll give you my jacket, I'll give you my heart.
But she won't come dancing tonight,
She's having the time of her life.

Am I alone?
Doing all I can do, just to be close to you.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.
Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the arse.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.

I do love, she does heartbreak.
I did love, till she broke my heart.

I do love, she does heartbreak.
I did love, till she broke my heart.

I do love, she does heartbreak.
I did love, till she broke my heart.

I do love, she does heartbreak.
I did love, till she broke my heart.

Doing all I can do, just to be close to you.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.
Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the arse.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.
I skip a heartbeat for you.

Doing all I can do, just to be close to you.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.
Always up for a laugh, she's a pain in the arse.
Every time that we meet, I skip a heartbeat.

I skip a heartbeat for you

Brief Info On Genre: Indie

In popular music, independent music, often shortened to indie music or “indie”, is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing. The UK Indie Chart was first compiled in 1980, and independent distribution became better organized from the late 1970s onwards. In the late 1990s and into the 2000s as the advent of mp3 files & digital download sites such as Apple’s iTunes changed the recording industry, an Indie Neo-soul scene soon emerged. Internet technology allows artists to introduce their music to a potentially enormous audience at low cost without necessarily affiliating with a major recording label.

Task 2 : Codes & Conventions of a Documentary

Codes & Conventions Of a Documentary

Key Points For The Opening:
  • The opening needs to capture the audiences attention asap!
  • Central question of the documentary has to be posed at the beginning in order to communicate to the audience what the programme is about, e.g Why is Britain the teenage pregnancy capital of Europe?
  • Some quick snippets of interviews with good responses can also draw an audience in.
  • Incidental music or even soundtrack, relevant song should usually accompany the opening sequence during some visual montage. The music must not however override the voice over.
  • Titles are all important; you need to announce the title of the documentary in some dramatic form. The name of the show should burst into the screen.

Actuality - Filming real events as they happen are a convention of a real documentary, but this could prove difficult with certain things like trying to film a hurricane or explosions in Iraq and thus you may need archive footage.

Reconstructions - These are also often used in documentaries. They are artificial scenes of an event which has been reconstructed and acted out on film based on information of the event. Reconstructions generally provide factual information, and give the viewer a sense of realism, as if the event really happened in front of them live. They often indicate that the footage is not real by using techniques such as blurring, distortion, lighting effects, changes in camera level, and color enhancement within the footage.

Fly on the wall - This is when you film real people as they do real things focusing on their life. in terms of your documentary you may be able to film footage of people having a genuine conversation about issues relevant to your topic, e.g a live sporting event, following an individual around as they do a job etc.

Voice over - Most documentaries have a voice over, a narration of what the programme is about, giving key information and introducing the topic of debate.

Montage Sequence - Montage sequences often conveys ideas visually by putting them in a specific order in the film. Narrative montages involve the planning of sequence of shots used to indicate changes in time and place within a film. Ideational montages link actions with words, and are often used in documentaries.

A different positioning of shots conveys different ideas to the viewer. For example, a montage containing a negative theme followed by a positive theme may give the viewer the idea that the positive theme is the main theme of the montage.

Montages in documentaries are usually linked with words that characters say. This visual representation of the characters thoughts helps position the viewer in the story, and helps the viewer better understand what the character is saying. It visually presents a progression of ideas on a screen.

Graphics - Documentaries often use graphics with written text, maps, drawings and still photos which can be incorporated into the opening sequence through jpeg files. Graphics should also appear as a banner at the bottom of the screen when showing who you are interviewing and what they do for a living.

Interviews - An expert interview with someone who has ample knowledge of your topic and can give a clear insight into issues that are vitally important. This could be a real expert, parents or students.

Vox Pops - This is more of a random interview with ordinary people on the street with a hand held camera, with a microphone popping up asking people what their views are on a relevant topic.

Talking Head - A shot of someone talking directly to the camera as a presenter of the documentary could also be used. This is called a 'talking head'. The talking head is the authority figure and presents all the facts.

Music - Music is critical for the opening sequence but the sound of the song or music should not dominate and override the sound of the voice over. you need to balance sound and images very carefully and fade them in appropriately.

Narrative structure- Who is narrating the piece or is a voice over being used? Is it a linear or non-linear narrative?

Task 2: Codes & Conventions - Short film

Codes and conventions of a Short Film:

Music - To nearly all of the films, music seemed to be a key part, whether it be an action or romantic by gradually making music faster and louder. In horrors, the music dips from being very fast to very slow and to create a scary effect toward the audience sudden sounds are very loud.

Camerawork - There tends to be a variety of camerawork in trailers to make things look more interesting, therefore many extreme long and close up shots were used with extreme high and low angle shots also used.

Acting - The main characters are always featured often and mainly are famous.

Costume - Tends to signify the wealth of someone or their style eg: in many trailers that are set in medieval times, the use of armour represents their power and age it was set in etc.

Editing - Scenes tend to start of being quite slow, but gradually as music becomes faster and more of the scene is revealed, attempting to grab the audiences attention, when scenes will either be in a random order or chronological as the story unfolds but leaving the ending out of it.

Brief Points

  • Short films normally start with there being a situation that needs helping/solving.
  • Usually only show a few (main characters) because there isn't enough time get to know the secondary ones.
  • Most short films are very low budget, normally because Hollywood films don't tend to create them and most short film companies aren't part of one of the 6 conglomerates.
  • The directors/editors usually aren't famous in short films so not alot of focus is on their names or at the start say introducing...
  • Tend to only last around 3 to 10mins.
  • Narrative enigmas are often used so the audience doesn't undersatnd fully the starting point, that sometimes is uncovered during the middle or end of the film.
  • Short films in Britain are often shown or distributed by British companies eg: Working Title. These films aren't very promenant in the US.
  • There is a lack of CGI (special effects) probably because of lack of money.
  • Short films aren't really shown in main cinemas, mainly just at specific film festivals. The most famous is Cannes.
  • Short films can also be documenteries and music videos.
