Task 2: Analysis of Short film

Analysis of a Short Film

This is the Life from Craig Dean Devine on Vimeo.

The first thing we see in this film is the titles, in black and white perhaps symbolising the simplicity of the short film we are about to see.
The first scene is of a family having breakfast, which is shot using a hand held camera to make the audience feel like they are a fly on the wall. There is then a Close up shot of the mother, showing her facial expression. She looks worn out and fed up of the same old daily routine. The mother is still in her dressing gown as the children head off to school, maybe shes not ready herself for work. She shouts at the girl "Just do it please!", the daughter has to pick up her little brother from school, this suggests the family may be from a working class background as the mother has to work longer hours to afford life expenses.
Non-diegetic sound is used to sound bridge one sequence to another which is a convention of a short film. The music sounds quite sad, maybe the family are going through a rough patch. We then see an establishing shot and montage shot with dissolves, these show the passing of time and the close bond between the brother and sister.
There is an extreme close up of dad crying which goes in and out of focus. He has sideburns showing he's been away fora long time, he's not caught up with the current trends as he's been in prison away from the family for such a long time.
Whilst the family are all around the table eating there is a shot reverse shot between the father figure and his son, he's trying to become a better dad, but the son knows once again he's unreliable as he was late to pick him up from school.
The father picks up the son late from school, a medium shot of the area is shown, there are no other kids outside the school, everyones already gone home and he is the only one left. A close up shot of tobacco and matches in their car is used, this is stereotypical of somebody who's been in jail. There are also crisps and a pastie, showing he isn't a very good dad, doesn't know how he should be acting or behaving.
The dad lets his son drive his car around an empty car park, in the hope that they will bond and patch things up between them, there is a Medium close up shot used as the dad says "I;ve missed you so much", he looks extremely sad, but glad that they have been reunited.
The family are all back home and there is conflict between the parents, neither one of the children can sleep. The dad has just come home from the pub, which has obviosuly caused this conflict, perhaps he was jailed previously due to excessive drinking.
The last few shots are medium shots of the dad at a desk, there are pens out of focus close to the camera, and someone is asking him questions (police). It is what looks like a routine check up now he's out of prison, the camera is hand held as if he is been watched.
